Ameer Alhalbi wins second prize at Days Japan 2017
Syrian photographer Ameer Alhalbi has received second prize in the Days Japan international photojournalism awards 2017.
He won for a series of images taken in Aleppo from April to November 2016 of civilian and UN relief workers rescuing people from collapsed buildings after air strikes. The same portfolio earned him second prize in the Spot News – Stories category of the World Press Photo awards.
Aged 21, Ameer Alhalbi began his career in 2013 working for local media and the Italian agency NurPhoto. Since February 2016 he has covered the Syrian conflict in the city of Aleppo for AFP, and described the horrors of daily life under aerial bombardment in an article for AFP’s Correspondent blog entitled « A Day of Hell in Aleppo ».
