AFP photographer Said Khatib wins the Mingote Prize in Spain

Said Khatib was awarded the prestigious Mingote Prize on Thursday in Madrid, in the presence of King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia, for a photograph taken in the Gaza Strip in October 2023.

AFP photojournalist Said Khatib, who managed to leave Gaza last April, has won the Mingote Prize, which is awarded annually by ABC.

This prize is among the most prestigious for journalists in Spain and is rarely awarded to a non-Spanish speaker.

He was recognised for a photo showing children leaning out of a car window, unaware of the tragedy unfolding in Gaza, represented by the destroyed building behind them in Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip, where the image was taken.

"The latest photographs published by (Said) Khatib denounce the suffering of the civilian population (...). His shots capture the hardships faced by the most disadvantaged in the conflict," ABC praised in May 2024 when announcing the prize winners.
