AFP Fact Check video playlists wins WAN-IFRA's Digital Media Awards Europe

The AFP Fact Check video playlist “How to Verify Information Online” has won the 17th Digital Media Awards Europe in the category ‘Best Fact Checking Project.’

The playlist of short videos shares tips and examples from AFP's digital investigation team, the world’s largest fact-checking team, from across the globe. The project was launched in October 2022 and new videos are regularly published on AFP's YouTube channels and other social platforms in EnglishFrench and Spanish

“The videos are just one way we’ve experimented with new formats to respond to misinformation directly where it is found online, we’re really proud to receive this recognition,” said Sophie Nicholson, Deputy Chief Editor of AFP Digital Investigation.

The annual Digital Media Awards Europe is organised by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and recognises excellence among European news publishers whose projects and products demonstrate creativity, inspiration, and a commitment to serving their readers.

A global panel of editors and media executives reviewed submissions and selected the winners across the award's 12 categories. The complete list of winners was announced on April 15 via WAN-IFRA's website.

The judging panel described the AFP Fact Check video playlist as “a powerful and creative initiative that not only informs but also brings journalists and users new ways to cross-check the news they consume and/or report about.” They also noted that “the content comes across as authentic, credible and accessible.”

The winners in each category will move forward to participate in WAN-IFRA's 2024 Digital Media World Awards, competing against top projects from other regions worldwide. The results will be announced on May 27 during the World News Media Congress in Copenhagen.
