ROLE

The Beijing deputy news editor will be a dynamic English-speaking journalist, with top-notch writing and editing skills, who will play a key role in driving the news agenda in China and Mongolia and coordinating with photo, video and factcheck journalists, of this busy and exciting patch.

You will take special responsibility for boosting the coverage of the Chinese society transformation, socially and culturally, and the economic coverage of China.

At the same time, China’s enormous influence -- both regionally and globally – requires the ability to deal with a huge range of other stories.

You will work closely with the China bureau chief and the news editor at the center of a 24-strong multimedia newsroom divided between Beijing and Shanghai, connecting video, picture and text coverage produced by a team of talented journalists, including specialists in economics and sports.

A familiarity with social media is increasingly vital, as is an understanding of the importance of photo and video in this visually vibrant country. The deputy news editor must be able to help journalists develop their stories, including features, always with an eye to how the story will work in photo and video.

The editor must ensure the reliability of news covered and respect for the agency's editorial policy.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.

REQUIREMENTS

You will have extensive journalism experience, excellent news editing and writing skills.

The news flow can be heavy at times, and the editor must be able to work under pressure and coordinate closely with colleagues in the bureau, the newsdesk in Hong Kong and the global AFP network.

A good knowledge of French is highly desirable in order to supervise/translate the copy from French-speaking writers. Mandarin would be a distinct advantage.
