ROLE
Agence France-Presse, one of the world’s leading news agencies, is seeking a dynamic English-speaking correspondent for its Wellington bureau to report and manage news coverage in New Zealand and many of the Pacific Islands.
The successful candidate will provide and coordinate coverage of life in the region including general news, sports including occasional match coverage, science, global warming, technology, health and lifestyle. AFP provides coverage in all formats including real-time breaking news, features, in-depth focus stories, and fact-boxes and in all media including photo, video, live video and text.
Depending on news requirements, the correspondent will travel across the Pacific region and may be asked to go on missions elsewhere in the world.
The coverage area ranges from New Zealand to the South Pacific islands including Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Samoa, the Cook Islands, Nauru, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, the Marianas, Guam, Niue, Tokelau and Vanuatu.
The correspondent will ensure coverage of important events across this area as well guiding freelancers and editing their production.
The job includes some administrative tasks mostly related to the office and the freelance network.
The Wellington correspondent reports to the news editor and bureau chief based in Sydney.
REQUIREMENTS
- Proven professional experience in English-language written journalism, showing a flair for quick, accurate, lively copy
- Ability to cover sports as well as general news
- Strong news judgement
- Fizzing with ideas for stories and features
- Capable of inspiring a team of freelancers across the region and of coordinating coverage in text, photo and video
- Team player
- Ready to work flexible hours when needed
