THE JOB

The Africa region seeks an experienced video journalist for a full-time managerial position based in London

You will oversee broadcast production from Africa, manage the workload of a busy desk and support the regional video editor-in-chief in editorial and logistical planning. You will work in coordination with and under the responsibility of the AFPTV editor-in-chief for Africa in Paris and the Head of AFPTV output for Europe and Africa, based in London.

You will put a specific attention on the Africa Weekly, notably forward planning of features and coordination of stringers in French and English.

You will coordinate the editing and transmission to clients of videos produced in Africa for broadcast and digital, including videos edited from live feeds, UGC content, third party images, and archives on top/breaking news stories as well as feature stories. You will also edit both incoming videos and live feeds.

You must ensure that breaking news coverage from Africa is sent rapidly to clients, and that makes sure feature videos have the required quality.

You must respect the agency's values and standards, ensuring that all video content is accurate, unbiased and timely.

You are responsible for coordinating editing tasks between regional hubs, for ensuring dopesheets in English and French are accurate, for subbing scripts for longer format reports.

You should be familiar with the issues involved in handling user generated content and AFP’s guidelines concerning the use of UGC, especially to find and verify amateur videos.

You must be prepared to work flexible hours, including mornings, evenings and weekends when necessary.

You may be called upon for input planning and coordination on both breaking news and slow news.

You will enter into on-call rotations with the Africa Video Editor-in-Chiefs overseeing input on those occasions.

You will closely monitor social media and strictly adhere to the Agency's guidelines on social media activity.

You will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping factcheckers in the network and ensure you are trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. Online training is available here.

As a general rule, you commit to respecting AFP's ethics charter.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
