Global news leader AFP is offering an exciting opportunity for a visually-focused, data-hooked journalist to join its dynamic global graphics service.
You are both a self-starter and a team player, capable of driving data-visualization innovation with a creative team of data journalists and graphic artists from Washington, Paris, Montevideo and Hong Kong.
You have a deep interest in and affinity for often complex data in all its forms, and an ability to interpret and transform that data into original stories or visual explainers that complement AFP’s core coverage – particularly in areas like the environment, climate change and developments in the digital world.
Based in Washington DC, your daily focus would be on gathering data sets and producing graphics on breaking news events unfolding across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean, while constantly searching out angles to illustrate major world trends and global news stories.
This collaborative position demands foresight, a high degree of autonomy, and the versatility to engage with a broad range of interests including economics, sport, science, international news and everyday lifestyle topics.
SKILLS REQUIRED
- Solid knowledge of the web and data gathering and analyzing tools, including perfect mastery of spreadsheets
- Solid knowledge of visualization, statistical analysis and cartography tools like QGIS
- Solid knowledge of Illustrator
- Coding knowledge would be a plus but not absolutely essential
- Deep interest in news and a high degree of responsiveness to events
- Previous journalism experience would be a plus but not absolutely essential
- Initiative and creativity, good writing ability, scripting skills
- Be highlight-motivated, self-starting and fizzing with ideas
- Desired working language: English, with knowledge of French and Spanish
