Fast-paced and exciting, the job involves a mix of reporting and editing both news and feature videos. Reporting to the Lagos video coordinator, bureau chief and news editor, and in close cooperation with the Africa desk in London, you will help to run and coordinate the video coverage throughout West and Central Africa.
While most of the reporting is done in Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria, reporting missions are to be expected in the countries covered by the bureau: Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, Togo, Chad, Central Africa, Gabon, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome & Principe.
This position requires travel, sometimes for breaking news stories. Availability to work evenings and weekends is essential.
On occasion, you may be called upon to help the Africa video editing desk, specifically in relation to production from the West and Central Africa region.
The Lagos video journalist is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of his/her reporting and respect for the agency’s editorial policies. Candidates will bring a multi-media approach to the job and coordinate closely with text reporters and photographers.
You will have to ensure the reliability of news covered and respect for the agency's editorial policy. You should be familiar with the issues involved in handling user generated content and AFP’s guidelines concerning the use of UGC.
You will closely monitor social media and strictly adhere to the Agency's guidelines on social media activity.
You will contribute to the fight against misinformation by offering any assistance needed to the digital investigation teams in the network and you will ensure that you are trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. You must be ready to work long days and a wide range of hours, including early mornings and late nights, as well as weekends.
In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
SKILLS REQUIRED
- Dynamic English-speaking journalist, with at least a first few years of experience in reporting and desk editing.
- Competency in Nigerian vernacular languages is a plus. French ability much appreciated.
- Sound news judgment, equally at home with breaking news as with sparkling and original features from a vast and exciting region.
- You need to demonstrate an ability to work under pressure
- You must have undergone hostile environment training or do so as quickly as possible.
